The Garwood Police Department
Welcome to the Garwood Police Department
The Borough of Garwood is located in the center of Union County New Jersey. Once known as the industrial center of Union County, our Borough has transitioned to a more commercial based suburban community conveniently located within easy commuting distance to NYC. Our Department has served and protected our residents and visitors to our community since 1906. With a patrol area of just under one square mile, we serve approximately 5000 residents and have roughly 1750 households. Our Department is comprised of 16 sworn Law Enforcement professionals including the Chief of Police plus 4 civilian dispatchers. Although small in size, the departments call volume for 2014 was just over 20 thousand requests for service. Garwood affectionately refers to itself as a "small community with a big heart."
The Garwood Police Department, maintains order, preserves and protects the lives, peace and property of the citizens of Garwood by vigorously patroling the Borough enforcing the Laws of the State of New Jersey and the ordinances of the Borough of Garwood. The members of this agency are sworn to support the Constitution of the United States and the State of New Jersey. Welcome, and thanks for visiting with us.
All Garwood Police Department patrol officers are now equipped with body worn cameras (BWC) The below photo is how the BWC will be worn while on patrol. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the GPD HQ at 908-789-1500
The Garwood Police would like to thank all the residents who have come in to visit with us this entire month of August. Unbeknownst to the Department, a local Facebook campaign was launched by resident Kathleen Patterson and her grass roots group entitled, “Good Deeds by the Heart of Women”. She promoted a police appreciation week, which due to local enthusiasm, ended up being extended to the entire month. It was designed to show community support for local law enforcement in an age when national sentiment for Law Enforcement is not all positive. Many visitors brought food and / or baked goods along with handmade cards of appreciation.
Chief Underhill stresses that these are indeed tumultuous times, full of misconceptions regarding Law Enforcement’s stated mission and how it is being carried out nationally. It is all about building and maintaining relationships with our communities. Law Enforcement must win and keep the confidence of those we serve, and in Garwood we strive to do this every day.
The support this community has shown for not only the Garwood Police Department but all of all of Garwood’s public safety departments, is overwhelming. We want all residents to know how grateful we are for your support and that we are here for you, 24-7-365. We are proud to wear the uniform and serve the residents of Garwood.
